Starting a conversation with a client, who feels like they are doing everything correctly and is still not seeing results, is quite uncomfortable for me. Getting real with someone and convincing them to drop the bullshit that is keeping them from succeeding, is uncomfortable. Because, honestly, there probably is something they are not doing. I hate being the bad guy, but seriously, what kind of coach would I be, if I let my clients feel COMFORTABLE. When it comes to changing your body, changing your health, changing your life, comfortable is a four-letter word.
More permanent change and growth can only occur outside of your comfort zone. Heck, the comfort zone is where pot bellies and disease are born. No one gets out of breath in the comfort zone. It is an easy place of going through the motions and keeping with the status quo. However, when you realize that what you are doing day-in and day-out is not working, something HAS to change. I’m not going to sugar coat it. Change is not easy. True long-lasting lifestyle change can be downright UNCOMFORTABLE at first. You have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The first time I heard this expression, I was not sure how to take it or apply it. In time, they became words to live by.
Take a trip with me....to the uncomfortable zone. Here we don’t just run when the weather is good. We run in the dark, we run in the rain, we run in the cold. We learn how to adapt (and dress) to whatever mother natures throws at us and run. In this zone, we stop avoiding burpees in our workouts at all cost. Here we don’t reward ourselves with food and sweets after a good workout or scale victory. We learn that skinny jeans, more energy and stamina, a sense of accomplishment and feeling like a badass are the best rewards.
How do we get here? We must seek out opportunity to challenge our habits that have led us to a place that we do not want to be. It is quite uncomfortable to drive past that drive thru, go home and cook a healthy meal when you are tired. But is it more comfortable be scared to step on a scale? It is uncomfortable to wake up early for a morning workout. But is it more comfortable than being so out of shape that you get out of breath going up the stairs of your home? It is very comfortable to eat the donuts a co-worker brought to the office as a morning “treat.” But it more comfortable than not feeling confident in your own skin? The opportunities for challenging the status quo are endless, and some are specific just to you. You know what they are, stop lying to yourself. The only way to know that you've made the correct decision, is if it feels like hard decision.
Make the hard decisions. Step out of your comfort zone and into a place that challenges you. If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you.
Remember, this is NOT your practice life.
