Despite engaging in rigorous activity/workouts, extreme endurance races and the like, I have been able to avoid injury. I did this by following a very simple plan…I listen to my body! I know when something doesn’t feel right. Whatever the activity is, I make the necessary modifications so that it is correct for my body; at that moment. However, last month, during a ski trip following lunch, the group decided to head back up the mountain for another run. Up to this moment I was excited, having a blast and did not want the fun to end and certainly did not want to be left behind.
In spite of the fact that I knew my body wasn’t ready, I jumped up on the lift and headed back with the group. I should have let them go on without me. I should have stayed back in the lodge to warm up and stretch. I should have delayed the anticipated gratification and just catch up with the group on the next time up the mountain.
Simple shit and a simple plan! I knew better. I was too fatigued. My body was stiff. I did not listen to my body. As I ignored all the signs, during an otherwise simple movement, I fell and slammed my shoulder into the snow. This incident ended my time on the mountain. While it’s getting better, just like the doctor said it would, my personal training and fitness has been set back significantly.
