Over the past few months, during the process of opening the new gym, I’ve been stopping people and telling them to keep grinding and work towards their dreams and goals. I mean, even more than usual. I feel as though I’ve finally been able to push past a barrier that’s been in my way for a long time. In fact, the theme that’s been most prevalent is the idea of not letting other people tell you, that you can’t do it. I’ve been saying to ignore those individuals, don’t even give them the time of day, and don’t give them the satisfaction of even making it a conversation. If you believe in it, put your head down, dive in and give it all you’ve got. Put blinders on and work tirelessly until you’re where you want to be.
This prompted me to ask myself…”John, who has it been that’s been telling you that you can’t do it?” “Who is the person that’s doubted you?” “Who is the person that’s kept you from opening the gym of your dreams?” Sadly, I have realized that that person is ME. It’s always been me. It was me that told me that, there is no way, that little old me, could ever achieve anything “bigger and better”. Debilitating self-doubt has followed me around for as long as I can remember.
Now, I’ve been extremely fortunate that I have an amazing support system. My family loves me and they believe in me. They’ve been pushing me to do better things and reach higher. In fact, a quick shout out to my beautiful wife, who has done nothing but encourage me. Her words and support broke my barriers. Thank you.
This brought me to an unfortunate thought/realization. How do people, who themselves are riddled with self-doubt, who DO NOT have the amazing support system that I have, how do they break through? What is the impetus for their change? How are they ever going to run fearlessly toward the life that they want, when everyone around them keeps telling them that it can’t be done?
My only idea that has any traction is this. It is YOU. It is ME. Your words have power. Be the voice that lifts up. Offer encouragement to those around you, even people you don’t really know. You/We can be the voice/spirit that gives them the boost to power through whatever difficulty/rut they may be dealing with. It does not have to be elaborate. The words can be simple. A pat on the back goes a long way, perhaps it’s a quick “You got this” or even a smile and acknowledgment of effort. Now more than ever, I believe that anyone can do anything. I believe that YOU can do anything. I don’t care that you’ve been fat or slow your entire life. You can lose the weight, you can run a marathon. It doesn’t matter that you failed before; maybe 100 times. The only thing that matters is right now. Get up, get after it. Attack it. It’s going to be hard, but “hard” can’t stop you. You can do it. We can do it. They can do it; let them know too.
